Artist Statement

I make realism work in order to heavily scrutinise a subject. Using graphite pencil, my work pushes drawing from a preliminary artistic process into an autonomous art form. Instead of disregarding the medium after outline, I continue with pencil to bring an image to full fruition, creating hyper accurate images of figures and nudes.

Through this monochrome lens, my work explores how our bodies play and function in modern life. Technology has altered our world and we have adapted to it. However, in drawing figures and portraits with a rudimentary pencil, my work maintains a narrative of organic human nature. This interception of the natural and unnatural, the old and new, is portrayed by putting such organic figures among a resolute, architectural form.

With each piece starts the grid, a construct often used for outlining proportion, that is to be concealed and then eliminated by the drawing once completed. However, I use the grid to command the form of each piece. If and how I choose to alter the grid is what conveys the meaning behind each artwork, and by reworking the grid in many of my pieces, my work fuses the experimental and the methodical together.

Assembling both the naturalism of the pencil and the grid’s harsh constructs mirrors our bodies as organic things of beauty, conforming to a world of artificial modern influence. My work interrogates how the degradation of romance has changed intimacy, how media has morphed our bodies and how these changes affect our lives.
