Artist Statement

Through a monochrome lens, my work explores how we as humans connect, to ourselves and to each other, in freedom and under control. In putting organic, human figures amongst resolute, architectural compositions, the work evokes a push and pull between humans as a force and the forces that act on us; people, restriction and relation. It tells the story of us as humans, amongst an increasingly unfamiliar world, trying to reconcile with our trauma, love and yearning amongst modern influence and manipulative media. Many things have altered our world and lifestyles over time, and we are increasingly out of touch with ourselves. In drawing figures and characters with a rudimentary pencil, my work fortifies the narrative of organic human nature, and brings everything we experience back to be represented in a historical, fundamental medium.

Whilst my drawing technique is based in realism, the form introduces surreal compositions which enclose the subjects. My process starts with the grid, a construct often used for outlining proportion, that is to be concealed and then eliminated by the drawing once completed. In reworking the grid in many of my pieces, my work fuses the experimental and the methodical together. Assembling both the naturalism of the pencil and the grid’s harsh constructs mirrors our earthly bodies, reacting to our current world and circumstance. My work interrogates how the degradation of romance has changed intimacy, how media has morphed our bodies and how these changes affect our lives.
